What is the most effective, non chemical way of controlling insects in a flower and vegetable garden?

by Tricia

Question:

“This is my first attempt at gardening, and even with daily watering and a compost application, some flowers are dying and others just aren’t growing well. Insects are the next logical thing I can think of as to what may be causing a problem (I’m learning as I go), and I only prefer to use natural, organic insect deterrent. Other gardens in my area (New England) are doing very well. Thank you so much for any advice!”

Suggestions:

One thing that I have found that works quite well, is to plant garlic.

Divide the garlic into cloves and just insert into the ground. the garlic will grow, and give off a scent that only the little critters detest, and this will stop them from chewing your plants.

Another way, is to crush garlic and let it seep in water for two days. strain it and put it in a sprayer, and spray your plants with this every 3-4 days, and after every rainfall. believe me, no critters will bother with your plants, and it will be a deterrent, the organic and safe way..

Happy organic gardening!

Mosquito Control – EcoMist Low Pressure Insect Repellent Patio Misting System Housed in Cedar Box

by Tricia

Mosquito Control - EcoMist Low Pressure Insect Repellent Patio Misting System Housed in Cedar BoxRepel bugs, be comfortable, stay cool – 3 in one misting system from EcoMist.

A 10,000 sq ft range, 5 gallon tank, do it yourself misting system that controls mosquitoes AND cools outdoor temperatures neatly hidden away in a 22 inch long cedar bench with a vinyl top.

The EcoMist mosquito and insect repellent uses a low pressure misting system to atomize water droplets which reduces air temperatures by up to twenty-five degrees. The EcoMist fogging mister comes as a kit and assembly is required!

Included with the misting kit are stainless steel nozzles and extenders, slip lock Ts, slip lock hose adapters, three way connectors and end plugs, O-rings and vinyl tubing. (See the Product Features below for a more detailed list.) The vinyl tubing can be buried underground or run under building eves. Nozzles can be elevated and mounted strategically to direct cooling mist in the desired areas. The fogging mister’s pump, tank and filters are contained in a convenient and handsome cedar bench.

The outdoor misting system uses organic, all natural Pyrethrum insecticide to repel and kill pesky biting bugs. One quart of Pyrethrum concentrate is included with the kit. Extra Pyrethrum is available in either a half gallon or gallon size.

Natural Pest Control

by Tricia

I noticed that some of my Poppy seed head had an infestation of Black Aphids.

Beginning this year I decided to garden without commercial insecticides.

I’ve been rounding up the ladybugs in my garden and moving them to plants that have had insect infestations. Here I moved a ladybug so it could eat the black aphids I found so I wouldn’t have to resort to a bug spray.

This video will accompany a blog entry on this subject along with before and after photos.
