Does anyone have an organic garden?

by Tricia

I want an organic garden. I am just starting out. Does anyone have any tips – what to read, certain veggies, fruit and herbs to grow and why, where to purchase the seeds or the plant, ect…..?

I can recommend a great soil amendment for organic gardening! It is called Pozzolan and it is an all natural volcanic diatomaceous soil amendment that will absorb and store water and nutrients at the root zone. Using Pozzolan will reduce the amount of water needed to keep your plants healthy. It will also create the perfect growing medium for the plants root system. Pozzolan is extremely porous and will improve the percolation rate in clay or sand based soils. It will also helps to break up or loosen the soil so that the root zone has a good mixture of air, soil and water.

It only requires one application, it will not leave the soil.

It is not available everywhere (yet) so you will need to ask at your local green house or nurserty if they carry it. Or check out one of the websites below, they may be able to help you find it.

Good luck and happy gardening!

SKG Sangha, India, Biogas and fertiliser from slurry

by Tricia

SKG Sangha won an Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy in 2007. TO find out more visit http://www.ashdenawards.org/winners/skgsangha and check out the Ashden Awards Blog http://ashdenawards.blogspot.com

SKG Sangha has radically improved the lives of thousands of rural families in Karnataka, South India by supplying them with both dung based biogas plants for cooking and a specially designed unit that turns the slurry from the biogas plant into high quality fertiliser. The benefits of biogas are well known. It provides rural women with a cheap, reliable source of energy as well as reducing indoor air pollution and easing pressure on forest resources. Less well known is how turning the biogas residue into high quality fertiliser can increase crop yields and, more importantly, give rural women the chance to make a profit. The units supplied by SKG Sangha produce fertiliser simply by combining the slurry with straw and leaves and then adding worms which re-digest the mixture to produce vermicompost. This vermicompost improves the yields of family crops and the liquid output from the unit can be used as an organic pesticide. The growing demand in India for organic fertiliser means that women can earn as much from selling half the vermicompost they produce as the household earns from selling the crops they grow. Since 1993, SKG Sangha has installed over 43,000 biogas plants in the state of Karnataka alone.

Organic Dairyman: Birdhouses

by Tricia

A long string of pink bird houses line the Bansen dairy farm.

Not merely for decoration, these bird houses provide nesting grounds for the swallows that feed on flies, using nature to control insect pests naturally.

Exterior and Grounds

by Tricia

Much nicer when it’s green, but still real nice. A hotub would be very appropriate at the North end of the house for the guests to relax and enjoy the breathtaking view. A large firepit area (or multiple) would be added at appropriate places on the property. It would also be the intention of Craig and Jennifer to add an Organic Garden that would supply as much as possible of Global Bed and Breakfast’s fresh produce (a greenhouse could be added in the future). A large front fence (Ie. Stone could be added to this property to add curb appeal and also added security if an electronic gate was added in the future. The property already has a home security system (monitoring fire as well) that is tied into the local authorities – police was unintentionally tested on one of the viewings and I saw them speed by within 4 minutes of the alarm being triggered. Please also note that one could throw a rock from the south end of this property and land it on the ‘Meadowlands Golf Course’ which I would intend to get a ‘rotating membership’ that could be shared amoung guests and a golf cart that we could drive right onto the course from the Bed and Breakfast with.
