SCOD Organic Gardens: SPRING SOIL TILLING

by Tricia

SCOD Organic Gardens:
Spring Soil Tilling / Ground-breaking Land Preparation (Circle Garden)

Soil quality for growing vegetables & herbs means having adequate combinations of minerals, organic material & consistency conditions for drainage (ratios of soil types & grade/slope). First aerate & weed the existing soil by tilling (as we describe in this video). Next mulch if you have leaves or straw, then push the mulch aside for adding new soil & planting, finally replacing the mulch around the seeds or transplant seedlings. Then summer stewardship methods come into play.

Tools Used: Hoes, Mattocks, Picks, Shovels, Rakes, Spades, Trowels (This Mattock is Adz/Axe for rocky soil use a Adz/Pick Mattock)

Some perennials have returned, as well as some weeds. Be aware of beneficial weeds! Lamb’s Quarters, Wild Spinach, a few dandelions, and anything else you like. Biodiversity makes for a healthy planet and diet.
