ABC 7 NEWS REPORT, September 28, 2006

The Dervaes family runs Path to Freedom, an urban homesteading project, in Pasadena. Since the ’80s the family has transformed their city lot into an organic permaculture garden. The yard features more than 350 varieties of plants which are either edible or used for other purposes. The garden supplies the family with their food year round. The family sells some of their greens to local restaurants. Doing this gives them money to purchase solar panels and energy efficient appliances. The solar panels provide their home with power and they use a solar oven to cook food on sunny days.
(Note: news segment mistakenly mentions the goats were producing milk. They ARE dairy goats and can produce milk, but like all mammals, they only lactate when pregnant or nursing babies. We haven’t bred our two goats yet. )

what an odd idea: ” …
what an odd idea: “have the government forcing the people to have food on their properties.” why does the government need to be involved in your kitchen. get real.

    ok maybe force it …
ok maybe force it too harsh but, having a solid food supply would be nice to ensure that if there was ever destruction of society there would be food. think everyone gets their food from the store. if the store was not there, there would be a real problem for most of the population, maybe you got sometype of supply on your property, but if not you could starve, that would suck lol. just imagine cities, the cites would suffer alot to cause theres no room for food trees.

I think so. He’s spammed lots of urban garden posts. I think he’s just a spiteful homeowner that’s afraid of a pet chicken making his house value fall. idiot.

    Silly American’s I …
Silly American’s I reckon. ‘course they’re living the dream. And right there in the city too. So What’s the presenter chatting about?? Yes chef. whole thing makes it sound ridiculous. Listen to presenter,0.12-.13, “and… they eat their own…” Hello, duh, we all know what she’s going to say — “crops”, and we know it, Cause people think about shit. Where it goes on the land. Reckon, for the first time in their professional careers: they thought about using a compost toilet.. on the job”

On just over 1/4 an acre of nasty pepple rock & sandy soil, I cheer theses guys on. I am inspired to put in more raised beds for not just favorite lettuce and herbs but keep out feline intruders. Also having an urban garden helps the bees and insect eating predators thrive.

    i actually think …
i actually think the gov should force us to have some type of food source on our properties. something like apple trees or some basic fruit tree, therefore during a depression where food services is gone, there will be some type of societal food source in your yard. not like communism but some type of bill or law that just sayes “everyones got to have some type of food tree “. right now if we go into a really bad depression, imagine how bad cities and things will be because there is no food

i like the idea of …
i like the idea of everyone having food trees infact i am pushing the mayor of my town to plant eatable plants and trees in the grass between the streets.

but i am agenst making it a law, there are already far tomany laws where the government forces you to do things.

    i am against too …
i am against too many gov laws too but it would be cool to have a country that has a unlimited supply of food because its everywhere. wow thats cool that your trying to do that in your town, i really hope you can make it happen, then maybe it will catch on in other towns and cities. like i always say if we really get a bad depression where civilization stops turning then at least you got something that can feed people and keep some type of order and slow down societys destruction.

About Author

I've been an avid gardener most of my life and I've always had an interest in organic gardening. My parents always had gardens when I was a child and while I can't say that no chemicals were used, most products and methods used to maintain the garden were natural. Now that I have a garden of my own (past 7 years) I've gone strictly organic. This blog is my attempt to share Organic Gardening Tips with you.
